Bamboo Song – A Hidden Gem in Palos Verdes

Whenever I go home I am crazy for the food. Hm, let me rephrase that. I am crazy for food and even more so when I go home. It’s the time that I visit those restaurants I have missed while in Indiana and eat the dishes I crave. This time was no different. I hit CPK (come on it *is* California Pizza Kitchen), Alfredo’s Mexican Food, Noah’s Bagels, Kincaid’s, and, best of all, Bamboo Song.

I had been dying for a steamy bowl of Pho for a while now thanks to the many food conversations with X so I couldn’t wait to get over to Bamboo Song. They came from slim pickings but have worked their way into the fabric of the largely Asian community. They filled the spot left vacant by Dr. Jay’s Slammin’ Ribs (no one I know was that brokenhearted over the loss) and soon grew to occupy the space that’s kitty corner as well. It’s a strange L configuration with the kitchen in the middle but it seems to work and probably cuts down on noise too.

Their menu is now posted high and shiny on the wall which makes me think that someone in the family is in the sign making business. Their prices are extremely reasonable. Two cokes, a plain noodle bowl, a beef vermicelli bowl, and a side of shrimp spring rolls were only $20.51.

I have always been served fresh ingredients and they are never stingy with the condiments, award winning traits in my book. The noodle bowls are typically accompanied by a heaping plate of crunchy bean sprouts, basil, jalapeños, and lime slices. When added to the hot soup it makes for one of the most aromatic experiences.

The vermicelli bowls begin with a bed of lettuce strips which is topped with vermicelli noodles, the meat of your choice, and an unbelievably good egg roll. The accompanying bowl of rice vinegar sauce can be poured over the ingredients, incorporating the layers of flavor and texture. While the vermicelli bowl can be a nice summer alternative to a bowl of boiling Pho, I suffer for my food and am loyal to my Pho year round.

They have various other dishes that I am sure are just as good as the Pho. Some of them are: Vietnamese crepes, rice dishes, meat platters, sushi, and boba, though the latter is really just a fancy drink.
